The process: The customer tells me what they are looking for and the measurements desired. I draw their mural and see if they like the design. (I design all my murals myself and no two murals are alike.) Stone is then carefully picked for its color and texture. I hand cut and shape the stone using an assortment of wet saws, grinders, and hand tools. Each piece is hand sanded and polished to enhance the natural color of the stone. The pieces are then inlaid into the field or background tile resulting in realistic colorful picture mural. |

Mural Themes TROPICAL MURALS My Tropical murals are a reflection of everything I see around me on the Island of Maui in Hawaii. My desire is to bring this tropical paradise into homes around the world. These murals are 3D carved for walls, flat inlaid for floors and frequently made entirely out of natural stone. NEW ABSTRACT MURALS My Abstract murals are a new direction for me. I wanted to create murals that went well with every kitchen design. I often use ceramic -for it's vivid colors, glass, assorted metal and pieces of metallic stone in my abstract creations. I can take your color pallet and make a unique mural for you. CUSTOM MURALS I am able to make just about any picture out of stone. I've been asked to make murals of camels, scorpions cars and more. I welcome the challenge of making something new to me. Mural Facts NATURAL COLORS My murals are not photographs or painted on designs that will fade or chip over time. They are made by carving shapes out of a variety of naturally colorful stone. Slate, Travertine, Quartzite and Marble are commonly used. Glass, river rock and micro stones are sometimes used to accent and border my murals. Porcelain and Ceramic is occasionally used as background to enhance or offset the carved pieces. UNIQUE Unlike common mosaic murals that use many small pieces to make a whole picture. My murals are made with large colorful pieces of stone that are carved to look like real leaves, flowers and animals. These carved pieces are inlaid, overlaid and layered within a solid background. DIVERSIFIED Because my murals are made using large pieces of stone, they can easily be set in exterior Stucco, Interior Imperial plaster, cement side walks, pool gunnite, and much more. My mural pieces are sunk in to horizontal surfaces, such as cement, while the material is still wet. For vertical surfaces such as walls- they are attached to the wall prior to applying plaster finishes. EASY INSTALLATION My murals are finished works of art. They come per-attached to tile backer board, are grouted and sealed. They are set just like a piece of tile. My deco are thin cut stone with tapered edges that are textured on the backside and can be installed over existing tile by scoring the tile where the piece will be placed and permanently glued in place with 2 part epoxy. Grout is applied around the edge resulting in an inlaid appearance. FREE INSTALLATION All my murals come with free installation. Installation of murals off the island of Maui are also free, However- transportation and lodging must be provided by the customer. I'm willing to install murals around the world. Note- some murals, such as Grand Wall Murals, require some on location fabrication and or installation only by me- My required travel expenses will be included in the price of the mural GRAND WALL MURALS My Grand Wall Murals are full wall murals made by cutting mural pieces right into your room's field tile. Without the conventional confinements of borders or frames, these murals feature life size tropical plants that traverse across entire walls transforming any room into a tropical oasis. . |

| Makena Tile was founded by local Artist Janna Morrison in 2002. What began as a tile installation company soon transformed when she discovered she could carve stone tiles into beautiful 3D picture murals that everyone loved. With only word of mouth advertising, she soon found little time for standard tile installation jobs and is now dedicating most of her time to designing and carving murals for homes from Hawaii to Canada. Based on the Hawaiian Island of Maui, she offers her mural carving service to the world. She welcomes the opportunity to travel and enjoys fabricating murals on location. She even ships her finished murals in custom crates she builds herself. She offers free installation of all her murals world wide- to customers willing to cover her travel expenses. |
| Maui artist Janna Morrison was born on the Island of Oahu and raised on the Islands of Maui and Hawaii. She currently lives on Maui with her two children. She is a tile contractor, mural artist, and owner of Makena Tile. She is also certified Paralegal, blue print draftsman, and an inventor. Based on extensive research- Janna is the only artist in the world that has made this style of colorful, tropical, Carved Stone Picture murals. This mural project was for a home in San Francisco. The
customer sent me the green Quartzite which I cut into
the leaves at home in Hawaii. I then flew to San
Francisco with the leaves- where I spent a week cutting
them into the field tile, then installing them on her
shower wall.
